While most humans experience some degree of anxiety from time to time, it becomes a problem or disorder when it happens frequently and affects their regular day to day activities. Millions of people worldwide experience the crippling effects of anxiety, with over 40 million adults in the US alone but, many are still in the dark because they are not aware of what anxiety is, its many symptoms and the various natural ways to cure it.
So, what is anxiety? By definition, anxiety is a feeling of or being worried, doubtful, feeling nervous, heightened eagerness, sudden compulsion or just a general feeling of unease. It is also classified as a mental illness because it’s usually all in the mind – an exaggerated fear. Types of Anxiety
The vast majority of people who suffer from anxiety disorders often experience one of the following three types of anxiety, differentiated by the overall symptoms and their effects on people :
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): This is the most common type of anxiety and the least severe. It involves a lot of worrying and fear about everyday things, especially when there are impending future events, such as going on a first date, taking a test or flying on an airplane. While it is the milder form of anxiety, it can result in lack of sleep, lack of productivity or lead to more intense forms of anxiety.
Phobias: Phobias are inherently fears but they differ from general anxiety because they usually don’t cause anxious feelings unless someone has to face the thing or person that they fear. When that happens, the response might be intense to the point where he/she feels like they’re going to die. Common fears include, arachnophobia, a fear of spiders, and claustrophobia, which is a fear of enclosed spaces.
Panic Attacks: Perhaps the most aggressive form of anxiety, panic attacks can strike at any time with very little or no warning. The feelings of fear, nervousness and worry are quite intense in a panic episode and may result in tightness of the chest, physical pain, rapid heartbeat and even the feeling of suffocation. Lasting for up to 10 minutes in most cases, panic attacks do not stick around as long as the other types of anxiety but usually leaves the victim feeling very shaken and powerless.
Other forms of anxiety include those that are derived from taking certain medications and show up as a side effect, separation anxiety disorder, which affects children who are separated from their parents, and withdrawal symptoms that happen in drug addicts or alcoholics. With some people still not knowing what is anxiety there are many who experience at least one of its many forms but do not seek treatment.
Once you know what is anxiety and its many forms, it becomes easier to treat. There are several drugs on the market that are efficient in clearing up the symptoms and a number of practices, such as hypnosis. Additionally, there are many home remedies for anxiety, some of which are as strong as drugs and may present fewer side effects. These include a number of herbs, many of which are taken in the form of herbal teas.
